Another route:
If you have access to a Windows cd & product key, and have a good bit of RAM, you can try virtualbox or kdm to install a virtual machine to run Windows inside Ubuntu. Virtualbox has "experimental" Direct3D support on their v3.0 guest additions. I have no experience with kvm, as I think it require cpu support - not 100% though. (If you have a 64-bit cpu, you most likely have hardware support.)
