Status: Open => Answered
DavidBriscoe proposed the following answer:
I had the same problem in Ubuntu (gnome). All audio was like whispers.
As described here: http://ubuntu-ky.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7361601
1. Remove pulse:
sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio
2. Run alsamixer in a terminal and pump up the Front volume level all the way to 100. (Hit right to go over to front and up to increase the volume.)
3. Restart and enjoy the loud ubuntu start up sound.
My volume wasn't enough to deafen anyone, but youtube was usable again!
