Tom proposed the following answer:
Continue in normal Ubuntu, i think it helps to be used to using Nano
before using it in "recovery mode". I was really talking about the
Windows section we added a lot later. The # marks "comment out" the
line which means the machine takes no notice of what we do to those
lines. It's a handy way of being able to leave notes in system and
configuration files for each other without our machines getting all
confused ;)

Really the main plan is to make a change to the menu.lst file because we
are getting familiar with that one, then we can check the change has
taken effect and that will give us confidence in knowing that when we
can use nano on the command-line in recovery mode to save a change in a
file. Also we need to change the section we added the other day because
i made a mistake, which is probably why you can't boot into Windows at
the moment - the error message you got when you tried was what we would
expect from the type of error i made ;)

I hope this works!
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
