vijay is still having a problem:
cd /etc
gedit hosts
shows the following in gedit page
127.0.0.1 localhost elcot-laptop
127.0.1.1 elcot-laptop
# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts

then we type in the terminal
lshw | head -1
shows the following
warning: you should run this program as super-user
elcot-laptop
elcot@elcot-laptop: /etc $

then another thing 
when we reboot the system it shows
ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS,kernel-2.6.24-24-generic
and enter into the ubuntu
the recovery mode line does not seen . then 
what we do now?
