[Question #76860]: Picasa chmod 666 command broke my video

New question #76860 on Ubuntu:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/76860

Hello & Thanks in advance for any help you may provide.
I have been running Ubuntu 9.04 & keep up with my updates & haven't had any problems until I attempted to install Picasa for Ubuntu. Once installed & upon my first attempt to run I received a message that the program might crash unless I run this command(I'm going from memory here so I hope I got it right) "chmod 666 /dev/nvidiast 0/dev/nvidiast 1/"(no quotes)(I'm not certain on the st part but I think it was there)
A message returned in terminal saying that no such directory was found so I omitted the dev/nvidiast1 and this time I did not receive any error message but what did happen is all my icons went to little white boxes with X's in them & I lost my background image and generally nothing was right so I rebooted & now I cannot boot into the system. I looked as best I could for errors and did see 3 items that failed(all graphic's oriented I believe). I made several attempts to repair through the recovery options in the grub but they didn't work. My video card is a Nvidia Gfroce 6200a AGP/256 & I was running driver version 180.44 & had their systems tools installed to change screen options.
I think this is fixable but with my limited knowledge I cannot proceed. Any help in fixing this very much appreciated. Mike
Please bear in mind all instructions given must very clear as I don't have much knowledge with the workings of Linux.
