actionparsnip proposed the following answer:
you don't need sudo then as your are in a root terminal. Sounds like you
have been messing with a LOT of low level system stuff which yo simply
don't have to mess with, including the chmod of the files in the first
part of the question.

As you are in a root console you do not need sudo as this is how users
run admin tasks.
