Question #69512 on Ubuntu changed:

Tom proposed the following answer:
Please post this as a new question. Launchpad doesn't really have a good way of dealing with old questions

I would recommend trying this cd as a boot disk. Booting up from it
should get you to a menu with "Try Ubuntu without changes to the
machine" as the default option and when you choose this it should lead
to a working desktop which we call a "LiveCd session". Most other
distros, not just Ubuntu also have this option and it's a good way to
check that a particular distro will work on a particular combination of
hardware.

If one distro doesn't work then try another. Mandriva is beautiful and has had a new release fairly recently

Fedora might be a bit trickier but is worth a go

And perhaps openSUSE might be worth a try

Alternatively you might try a few distros from different families until you find a family that does work well with your hardware and that might then help get Ubuntu working on your machine by copying their xorg.conf or something. For this type of hunt i would suggest smaller, lighter distros such as Wolvix (slackware family), Knoppix, (Mandriva family, is that the same as RedHat family?)

Really trying these as LiveCd sessions and swiftly moving on if they don't work properly is the fastest way of finding some trick worth trying in Ubuntu.

It's probably just some boot parameter like "acpi off" or something simple so here's a guide about some of that
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions
https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/installation-guide/i386/boot-parms.html
https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/installation-guide/i386/boot-troubleshooting.html

But really the main thing is to re-post this question and then try a few of these things out while you are waiting for an answer!
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
