The best disks to use for this type of thing (rather than for data storage which is completely different) are the cheapest 'write once' cds such as ones you can only buy in packs of 10 or more.  Here's a guide that might help

Should get you to a menu with "Try Ubuntu without changes to this
machine" and choosing this default option should get you to a working
desktop comparable to whichever Windows you are used to, we call this a
"LiveCd session" if it works.  Most distros have this option although
Ubuntu is the only one to give it such a fancy title & menu - it's good
to check the distro works well on your hardware and that you like the
way it looks and feels.  Of course it's a little slower running from the
Cd and things saved to the Documents folder vanish when you reboot or
take the cd out but you should be able to save things to the hard-drive
through the "Places" menu.  Also Ubuntu seems to be about the only
distro that picks up your internet connection and allows you to surf the
internet with Firefox straight from the LiveCd session, in most others
you have to press at least 2or 3 buttons to make that work ;)

Anyway, if the LiveCd session works then here's the best way to install Ubuntu (or any other distro imo & ime)

I chose non-free components although i haven't had to pay anything for them but hope to free myself by going completely OpenSource some day.
