Hi :)

It's good to hear your cd/dvd-drive problems have been fixed.
I find that the best cds to use for this are the really cheap 'write once' cds that you can only buy in packs of 10 or more because. The more expensive cds really don't seem to work very well for this and dvd's are hopeless. Here's a guide to help make a great cd
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

Then try booting up from the Cd and use the option "Try Ubuntu without
making changes to this machine", that should get you to a working
desktop which we call a LiveCd if it works. It's a good way to check
that Ubuntu will work easily on your hardware so most distros (different
versions of linux) have this feature available. Ubuntu's LiveCd's
Firefox should get you straight onto the internet and able to surf into
here. With most distros you have to press 2 or 3 buttons but Ubuntu
usually manages to pickup on your internet connection straight away :)

Please let us know how this all goes :)
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
