[Question #77074]: ATI Radeon X1300 Driver problem

New question #77074 on Ubuntu:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/77074

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 on a 'Fujitsu Siemens AMILO Si 1848+u' Notebook. This machine has a 'ATI Radeon Mobility X1300' graphics card. I installed the 'ATI binary X.Org' driver from 'Add/Remove' on the Start Menu. The drivers installed, but when I restarted the machine the display was mostly just black with streaks of distorted colours at the top of the screen, as if the incorrect resolution had been set.

Can anyone help me install the correct drivers for this machine?

Also, how would one set the resolution options for external monitors? I have a 19" Philips 109B CRT monitor with a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1440 / 60 Hz. Is the maximum resolution [of the external] limited by the video card, the monitor itself, or both?

Thanks
