actionparsnip proposed the following answer:
you need to install the guest additions. Launch the vm and get it
booted, you can then click one of the options at the top of the desktop
and select download guest additions. It will pull down a 20Mb ISO file.
You will then need to mount this (or easier is shutdown the VBox and
have the iso mount at boot)
it will mount to /media/cdrom0 and you will find some executable files
which will install the modules and other much for virtualbox's
virtualise hardware.
You may also need an xorg.conf tweak but just try a reboot to see if the
display is ok. If not then here is an xorg.conf you can implement:
