TonyR is still having a problem:
Hi

The problem was resolved with a modification to the xorg.conf file
setting explicit Vsync and Hsync value ranges.

i estimated these values from review of other people's xorg.cong files
with similar equipment.  It is very difficult for users to know what
they should be entering in these type of files if they do not know exact
details about the monitor in ther laptop or the display adapter
capibilities.  Many Laptop manuals simply do not provide this detail.

I am most grateful for those who assisted.
