hmmm maybe i'm being too complex actually. try a package called
'netapplet' install that. the in a terminal run:
netapplet
netapplet should then load everytime you log into gnome. the icon should
allow you to choose between network connection eth0 of wireless. It may
be worth giving this a go before looking at more complex options like
ifplugd.
