actionparsnip proposed the following answer:
Your router has security on it, either WPA or WEP. This is to keep
people from using your connection.  You will need to enter this to pair
the connection. You will have set this when you configured your router,
or it was preset and is written in the manual of the device

either that or you are trying to connect to a device that isnt your own.
