Is the public wifi unencrypted (no WEP or WPA etc)

Do you get an IP address via DHCP? Can you please run:

ifconfig

when you are in range to see if you have an IP. If you use static IP for
wireless in your own LAN, this will need to be set back to DHCP for the
other network.
