Tom proposed the following answer:
Possibly a "segmentation fault" whatever that means. Please try goin up
to the top taskbar and click on
Applications - Accessories - Terminal
and into the terminal/command window/console type
evolution
Now Evolution should open up. try sending yourself a quick email and
see if you can read it. Also check to see that the email to your friend
either got sent or got saved into the drafts folder. At some point
Evolution might suddenly quit again and at this point you should be able
to see a lot of feedback about what happened as output in the terminal
console. Please copy the last few lines of that into here so we can try
to make sense of it.
