here is the best answer:

sudo aptitude purge brasero

and then follow the process on

which basically says "mkisofs -dvd-video -o dvdimage.iso SOURCEDIR/" to create an iso file, and then use growisofs or gnomebaker or whatever else to burn the iso file to the DVD; I would add that you should burn at the slowest possible speed if you expect to play this on the widest variety of DVD players.

it turns out brasero has numerous critical flaws, this is just another;
one writer called it "Hardy's bad idea"
