I am a bit of a "newbie" with Ubuntu but I moved the .bin from my desktop to the home directory, this to avoid using the "cd" command, and "chmod +x" could find the file. Never mind that the actual installation got hung up and Google Earth is not installed as yet. I worked with Linux about 30 years ago and I just learned that just because you move the "command" gui to your desktop (upon opening it it shows that is where it resides) it is still a command based operation and appears to remain in your home file.
