Have you tried any of the very light-weight versions that have excellent
hardware detection and support. Please try LiveCds of Knoppix and
WolvixHunter 1.1.0

It might also be worth trying Puppy or sliTaz. You say your machine has
1 Gb ram but do you know it's cpu speed? Have you tried just hard-drive
installs or have you tried LiveCd sessions too?
