Mark Rijckenberg proposed the following answer:
Physically remove the Creative Labs SB X-Fi audio card from your pc and
then reboot the pc and retest sound.

Maybe Ubuntu is trying to play sound on the SB X-fi card for which the
audio drivers are not installed yet....

The channels are not muted according to alsamixer. Please also check if
channels are muted according to gnome-alsamixer.
