[Question #78033]: Error running Synaptic and apt-get

After breaking the normal running of update-manager, neither this nor Synaptic nor apt-get can run normally.
Trying to run apt-get on console gives this result:

pep@pepe-entrada:~$ sudo apt-get check
Reading package list... Error!
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_jaunty-security_main_binary-i386_Packages
E: No se pudieron analizar o abrir las listas de paquetes o el archivo de estado (Can't analyze or open the package lists or state file)

I've tried:
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get clean all
sudo apt-get update
with no effect, it shows the same error message and stops the program.
