ryuhayabusa confirmed that the question is solved:
hey guys i fixed it!

the directory name had spaces in it.

i only realised this was the problem because i got this error 172 and it
said vim didn't support multiple filenames. i realised it must think the
spaces are between different files i was trying to write to.

maybe someone knowledgable can fix this?
