[Question #78094]: Jaunty gives '$ HOME/.dmrc file being ignored' after booting

New question #78094 on Ubuntu:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/78094

Jaunty on Acer laptop, all was well until I tried to connect to wifi in my son's home.
Ubuntu 9.04 does boot but I can't connect to wireless and my audio system, eg. when trying to use skype, doesn't work properly.
Have tried 'sudo chmod 644 /home/username/.dmrcsudo chmod 644 .dmrc to no avail, ie it just returns to username@xxxLaptop:~$
What should I try next please?
