I think so.  I've not used Debian and it has a reputation for being
slightly less noob-friendly but if you have *nix experience and are
happy engaging with their community forums then you should be fine.  I
gather that with Debian you have lots of choices about which download to
aim for.  Stable branch is usually quiet old but you should be able to
force ultra new(ish) apps into it - development branch is quite a lot
more stable than it implies and does have quite a few advantages.

The i386 sounds like it should work on the machine you've built there :)
I think netinst is going to want to boot the machine over the network so
you might need to adjust the boot order in the bios to allow that.  I
think that might even avoid the need for burning to cd at all :)
