Question #78127 on gdm in ubuntu changed:

    Status: Open => Answered

Tom proposed the following answer:
Dohh. In that case when you are booting up do you get a few different
choices for booting into Ubuntu? If you do then choose one that has
"recovery mode" near the end of it's line. This should take you to a
menu with a disturbingly blue background. The choice "Drop to Root
Shell" should get you to a command-line worth trying AP's

sudo apt-get --reinstall install gdm

although you don't need the sudo when you're on that particular command
line as you're already root. After trying that it's probably best to
type

reboot

and see if that works at last now :)
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
