Question #78027 on firefox-3.0 in ubuntu changed:

Tom proposed the following answer:
You can trick the installer into not overwriting all of you stuff when
you reinstall 8.04. When you get to the Partitioning Section choose
"Manual Partitioning" and make sure all the partitions are UNticked in
the "Format?" column. It doesn't always work out right the first few
times you try this so please backup any data first - but as it's a
temporary backup it only needs to be a quick copy of your /home folder
onto external drive or Usb stick or something
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
