Which video card and driver:
lshw -C video
Check system administration -> hardware driver
if the correct driver is checked.
In case grep errors in Xorg.0.log:
grep -i error /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Test case, start a prefered app in a terminal e.g.:
vlc
reproduce the steps until the issue occurs, note the time and take a look in the logfiles.
