Sam proposed the following answer:
Ok, try, stop gdm, purge, reinstall, restart gdm or reboot.
I'd take a look in config files also: /etc/gdm/
In case you have a backup from a working one compare or replace it.

I'd take a look in logfiles, e.g. Xorg.0.log (as mentioned above) and
dmesg.

You may take a look at your menu.lst as well, there are options hiddenmenu, howmany (self explaining).
