marcobra (Marco Braida) proposed the following answer:
You can use Gparted to resize a partition.
Gparted must works on unmounted partitions
So please boot from Ubuntu Standard Desktop live install cd
Perform resize using the menu item "Partition Editor"
you will find "Partition Editor" item under menu System->Administration
menu of Ubuntu desktop Live install cd.
The resize of partitions might take hours...
