studjethro confirmed that the question is solved:
now that's funny.  i didn't realize that viewing my laptop on my 60" plasma via cables professionally installed behind walls meant that i was being so '80s.  it doesn't matter anyway, as i went back to windows.  but, i'll miss the witty humor that is included for free with ubuntu...
oh, and you should recycle your tv's...don't just throw them out.  witty you are, but not smart...
