Md. Sahadat ullah gave more information on the question:
after playing vlc in terminal with "vlc --vout x11" I changed settings as suggested,then I can see only mp4 files,other files are not shown in the "open" dialogue box though codecs are viewed in a small pan.
while playing mp4 it only gives video but no sound are coming.....
now what to do????????
