I am not sure of the way in which you tried solving you problem with gparted, so i'll offer a solution that might be the one you tried. Boot your computer with the liveCD, not from your hard drive, and use gparted from there. Try resizing partitions there. Partition magic for windows isn't as good as gparted in liveCD mode. 
Regarding the user name issue: have you tried adding the applet on the panel? i mean right click on the upper panel, choose "add to the panel", and add the aplication called "shut down" or "log out"; i think one of those is the one that shoes your user name there.
