It does take a bit of time to get used to all this but it's well worth it. Hopefully just reinstaliing the "gnome-panel" will be enough to fix the problem in
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+question/78570
A full re-install seems a bit like trying to crack a walnut with a
sledge-hammer ;) Preinstalled machines often have a number of carefully
tweaked settings aimed specifically at your hardware so it's worth
avoiding a full re-install if possible. It's a lot of work although
obviously a lot easier than trying to install Windows lol.
If you're unconvinced then download Ubuntu from
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download-netbook
andfind the instructions from there. I think you need a fairly large Usb stick but i could be completely wrong there. During the install it might be worth choosing "Manual Partitioning" and then make sure all the partitions are UNticked in the "Format?" column. Edit the main Ubuntu's partition to set it's "Mount Point" to "/" as / marks where the installer will install all the Ubuntu programs and system files. If it shows you have 3 partitions then it might be worth telling us about them so we can guide you on to how to make best use of them.
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
