Tom proposed the following answer:
I was under the impression that the current grub was going to be renamed
"grub-legacy" and grub2 renamed "grub" so that upgrading to grub2 would
be seamless and most users wouldn't notice.  This would leave grub-
legacy (and also Lilo of course) available for any hardware (or cranky
people) that had issues with moving forwards.  if we were talking about
moving from the linux kernel to the hurd kernel then i cold see why all
this fuss would be useful but honestly, how many people are likely to
even notice that their grub has significantly improved? lol

Anyway, thanks for asking this question alerting me so i can test grub2
out on my machine and pass my glowing reports on to the dev's for this
great project :)  Nicely done :)
