Pam is very different from gdm so yes i would recommend making a handy
copy of the gdm line somewhere handy first.  Linux is great at giving
freedom of choice.  I've only heard good things about pam so it should
be ok.  There's another one i think, called "slim" i think but that went
wonky on me once lol
