Blimey Sam, i made 2 tiny errors - one of which doesn't even affect the question or the answer in this thread. Where i said to change
# default=0
to
default=1
i should have said to change it to
# default=1
and likewise
# howmany=all
should have been to
# howmany=2
because those are 2 of some handful of special cases in the menu.lst which seems to be inconsistent internally (sometimes a line is commented out by a # and sometimes it isn't) and is due for an upgrade replacement 'soon' with the replacement being "grub2" which has been in beta but ready for about 6 years. Are there other errors in what i said apart from those details? Would my mistake have stopped the desired effect from taking place?
Anyway, it's late here, perhaps i mis-read you
