It only affects the data in the partition in which ubunto is going to be installed - anything in there will de erased permanently. But the files in the other partitions will not be affected. Each partition is considered as an isolated hard disk. Make sure the installer shows you the diagram of the future disk as you wish; it appears before starting the install, so if you have any doubt or fear you can cancel the whole thing and ask for more information. 
IN ANY CASE, making a backup is always recommendable, as an OS installation is an important event in a hard disk's life. Even ubuntu's website (i can't remember where) gives you that advise. It is not that something bad IS going to happen - but there is some chance, i guess, so that they recommend to backup your files.
