Fixed it.

I was being stupid - it DHCPed with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 and I was
manually entering a subnet of 255.0.0.0.  Logic tells me that it should
work with 255.0.0.0 - but it didn't, now I've given it 255.255.255.0 it
works fine.
