[Question #78750]: Suddenly backspace opens new terminal window

New question #78750 on gnome-terminal in ubuntu:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/+question/78750

I've been using Ubuntu for a couple of months with fair success but suddenly, probably a bad keystroke, backspace now opens a new terminal window instead of backspacing! This is really annoying.

I've edited out any reference to backspace in all the ~/.gconf/gnome-terminal/* keybindings files without success. Under Edit>Keyboard Shortcuts it still says that backspace action is a new window.

A similar thing happened early on and I was able to edit out the offending keybinding (don't remember what it was now) but this time I'm stumped. No matter what I do, even closing and reopening all terminal windows, there doesn't seem to be a way to modify the default keybindings! I know this isn't correct but am at a loss to find where its happening.
