now you've corrected yourself wrong. With # the line would have no effect, it is commented out. This line doesn't belong to the inner block.

No one keeps you from trial&error experiments with the suggestions you gave.
Usually it's common to test commands before advising them to others and vice versa to verify command suggestions from others.
However, no one is free from failure, e.g. mistyping, and because of that, especially when it comes down to system files, the effort needs to be strong on avoiding mistakes. No need to mention where lax discipline can lead to, proof are thousands of questions every day on *nix platforms.
The bottom line is the quality of learning effect and how it can be achieved without a fallback into MS behaviour, speaking of reinstallation.
Sorry, I don't get the clue what GRUB 2 has to do with correctly editing
a current existing menu.lst
