Tom proposed the following answer:
On the top taskbar please click on

Applications - Acessories - Terminal

and into the terminal/command window/console type in

totem

Hopefully totem should open.  Now try dragging a movie onto the totem
window.  Please let us know if totem crashed before dragging the movie
onto it or afterwards.  Also please copy the output from the terminal
console into here.
