Thanks for the advice about the back-up Tom, I forgot that.

As for the commands, I think it is better to teach people to use gksudo
for graphical programmes (e.g. gedit), rather than sudo.

So the terminal commands you proposed would then become:

cd /etc/apt
ls
sudo cp sources.list sources.list.010809
ls
gksudo gedit sources.list

The commands above allow you to edit the file; if you just want us to
review the contents you might, alternatively, try:

cat /etc/apt/sources.list

then copy-paste the output.
