When it says that it can't remove viruses this is the same for most
antivirus programs. There is one antivirus that is meant to be able to
extract a virus from files leaving them uninfected!! Most antiviruses
identify the infected file and then help you quarantine the file - then
you just need to get a duplicate (but uninfected) version of the file to
replace it. Usually that's quite easy in linux, just "fix broken
packages" or try reinstalling something that needs the file as a
dependency. Of course this is theoretical because i don't know of
anyone that has really found a virus in linux.
Hopefully one of the above links will help but only if you have installed the proper Ubuntu version of Avg. If you are trying to run the Windows version through Wine then you will probably be stuck

because Windows programs aren't meant to run in linux, nor do Windows viruses fare well in linux so you can say fare well to virus problems now :)
