Question #77831 on synaptic in ubuntu changed:

    Status: Needs information => Open

Jacob Moh gave more information on the question:
Dear Michael,

Hi. Between my original post and now, I have kinnda resolved the issue.
I merely uninstalled the sane-backends as well as the libusb-dev
software and reinstalled them both all over again. However, whenever I
update or install any new software, the scanner fails detection again.
So, I go over the process of uninstalling and reinstalling the
sane-backends as well as the libusb-dev.

My firmware (u176v046.bin) is downloaded from the sane website
reference; it works. I installed my firmware
in /usr/local/share/sane/snapscan. Each time I reinstall it, i make
sure the snapscan.conf is correctly directed to the firmware folder.

This all works well and xsane detects the scanner, but when a new
software or update is installed, xsane no longer detects the scanner.

I hope this info helps you diagnose the problem. Thanks for replying to
my post.

Jacob
