[Question #79008]: character attribute changes

New question #79008 on openoffice.org in ubuntu:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+question/79008

When I highlight a character in a string of text and type a new character to replace it, the new character is formatted like the character before the one being replaced - not like the replaced character. For instance, I have a list of topics that I am going to teach this year. Next to each topic I have a number of weeks in italics that we are going to spend on each topic. As I hightlight and change the number in italics, it is no longer in italics, but formatted like the character before it. I have checked this with other typeface changes (bold, underline) in other situations and it is consistent.
Is there a reason for this? One of the things that I didn't like about Microsoft Word, that I would love to see disappear as I migrate to OpenOffice is having my formatting change on me when I replace text - that is, when I highlight a block of text and change it, I want my new text to be formatted exactly as the text I am replacing. I also don't want my change to change any of the formatting of the text adjacent to the text I am changing (a "feature" that drove me crazy in Word...).
    Thank you.
