My case is very similar but I couldn´t sorted out. There is no problem with display. When I boot from Ubuntu CD for trial of Ubuntu, no problems. It was working well (with Desktop Cube). It could not install Above Flash Player. That was the last instance. After a while it when black. When I turn it on, after the ubuntu progress bar I just get blackness. no CTR ALT # works. I get the terminal from booting recovery. I am newby in linux and Im not IT. Sorry if there are bits that sound out of ignorance. Could someone help me?
Specs: 
Laptop Acer Aspire 5500Z. 14.1 WXGA Acer CrystalBrite, 1280x800. Intel 915GM. Radeon X1300
Tried: 
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Result:
