I'm seeing the same problem (kubuntu 8.04). Here's a typical session:

[15:58] [Info] Looking for server irc.ubuntu.com:8001...
[15:58] [Info] Server found, connecting...
[15:58] [Info] Connected; logging in...
[15:58] [Notice] -- *** Looking up your hostname...
[15:58] [Notice] -- *** Found your hostname, welcome back
[15:58] [Notice] -- *** Checking ident
[15:58] [Notice] -- *** No identd (auth) response
[15:58] [Welcome] Welcome to the freenode IRC Network lcampagn
...

(10 seconds later):
[15:59] [Error] Connection to Server irc.ubuntu.com lost: remote host closed connection. Trying to reconnect.
[15:59] [Info] Looking for server irc.ubuntu.com:8001...
[15:59] [Info] Server found, connecting...
[15:59] [Info] Connected; logging in...
[15:59] [auth] *** Looking up your hostname...
[15:59] [Notice] -- *** Found your hostname, welcome back
[15:59] [Notice] -- *** Checking ident
[15:59] [Notice] -- *** No identd (auth) response
[15:59] [Nick] Nickname already in use. Trying lcampagn_.

Note that the second time, my nick is still in use since the last
session terminated prematurely.
