actionparsnip proposed the following answer:
Boot to a Live USB stick or Live CD. You will then be able to manipulate
your partitions freely. You could also (much simpler) mount the
partitions to empty folders in your home and use them as storage.

You cannot manipulate partitions if they are mounted. The system will
not allow it so the live USB/CD environment will give you a boot which
is off of your internal drive/s and allow you to manipulate them as you
wish. Ensure your backups are recent if you intend to do any drastic
changes (like concactonate or resize partitions)
