Re: [Bug 1459525] Re: Amount of fonts distributed are too many - brings down loading time for applications
We could enhance our installer so that one can de-select fonts during
installation all though one chooses to install graphics applications.
The way you can make choices now is not optimal.
We are right now redefining what our metas may look like in the future,
so graphics may be split into more than one meta. We could also look at
splitting fonts into roman and non-roman chars as Erik suggests. And, if
we want to go even further, we can split fonts into three packages:
ubuntustudio-fonts-base (a set of the most typical fonts)
ubuntustudio-fonts-roman-all (a complete set of all roman fonts
available on Ubuntu)
ubuntustudio-fonts-<non-roman>-all (a complete set of all non-roman
fonts available on Ubuntu)
But, I'm not adding any concern to licensing in this approach, which I
need to look more at first.
A font manager sounds like something we need. If we do split fonts into
more packages, and also make installation of fonts a user choice during
Ubuntu Studio installation, we might not need to disable any fonts by
default. IMO this could be confusing in fact. It would need to be
coupled with some information on that some fonts are disabled, and that
you absolutely need to take a look at the font manager to see what is
enabled or not.

Title:
Amount of fonts distributed are too many - brings down loading time
for applications
Status in Ubuntu Studio:
New
Bug description:
A user reported this issue the Ubuntu Studio contact mail, and I found it was a fair point.
We should minimize the fonts we distribute to an amount which is reasonable.
