did you try to start the gnome-power-manager using a console? I thnk it
helped on my notebook.

  No battery status in System Status Area

Status in Ubuntu Gnome Remix Metapackages:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  There isn't a Battery status notifier in the system status area, which
  is a big problem, considering I'm using a laptop.
